Carla Lockhart MP
Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart has echoed the comments of DUP Leader Rt Hon. Sir Jeffrey Donaldson MP, in saying that the Government must restore Northern Ireland’s place in the UK internal market, and remove the constitutional threat of the Protocol, or the political institutions will be unsustainable.
Carla Lockhart said:
“The command paper issued by the Government before the Parliamentary recess was a welcome first step. It reflected a change in the position of the Government, in that we finally had unambiguous recognition of the issues with the Protocol, and the negative impact it was having in Northern Ireland.
"The Government made clear its intention to enter negotiations with the EU. However, this has not happened. Even last week the EU Commission Vice-President Maros Sefcovic, on a visit to Northern Ireland, rejected the Government Command Paper and pledged support for the Protocol.
"This intransigence from the EU is threatening to cause further economic damage to Northern Ireland, continued cost rises and choice limitations of consumers, and ultimately political instability not seen for some time.
"My Party Leader, Sir Jeffrey Donaldson MP, has given the Government and EU a matter of weeks to find solutions that address our concerns. He has made clear the choice – the protocol, or the political institutions. I fully endorse this position. Enough is enough and the DUP will not be reneging from this position.”
