Alliance Upper Bann representative Eóin Tennyson has welcomed news that a £430k upgrade scheme to improve the shared footway and cycleway is due to commence at Craigavon lakes, but says wider issues including safety need to be addressed.

The Department for Infrastructure improvement scheme will involve the resurfacing and widening of 5km of existing shared footway and cycleway and include associated drainage and signage. The work will commence on Monday 20 September 2021 and will take 8 weeks to complete with an estimated completion date of Friday 12 November.

Councillor Tennyson said, “This scheme is a welcome and long-overdue investment in active travel around the lakes, and will complement the leisure and water sports centres.

“However, recent events have demonstrated the need for safety improvements to be considered in the harbour area.

“Footways beyond the city park limit, not included in this scheme, are in desperate need of improvement and residents have repeatedly raised the need for additional lighting in the vicinity of the lakes.

“Alliance will engage with Council and with the Department and lobby to see these changes brought forward as soon as possible.”
