SDLP MLA Dolores Kelly has welcomed SDLP Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon’s announcement of a £500,000 Living Places and Spaces Grant Fund.
The fund will provide grants of between £1,000 and £10,000 for community and voluntary organisations and schools to create more sustainable and resilient outdoor spaces.
The fund will open for applications in November and is being administered in partnership with the National Lottery Community Fund.
The Upper Bann MLA said: “I will be encouraging local schools and community groups to avail of this funding to build green spaces that many are crying out for.
"Throughout the coronavirus pandemic we have seen the importance of having accessible outdoor spaces, especially as not everyone has one at home. This funding will be a welcome boost right across our community.
“SDLP Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon has once again demonstrated her commitment to building cleaner, greener and healthier communities for people across the North. Since taking office Minister Mallon has made this one of her top priorities and has responded to the needs of local groups.
“This initiative will also act as a building block in our attempts to tackle the climate crisis. We all must pull together to safeguard our planet for future generations and that work begins in our local communities. This scheme will provide funding for tree planting, managing water, growing vegetables and creating areas for active travel allowing our local communities to play a key role in tackling the climate crisis.”
