Lurgan’s season got underway last Saturday afternoon in a limited fashion with the Green not being playable due to weeks of heavy rain.

Neil Sloan, Club President raised the club flag followed by Eileen Robson, Lady Captain delivering the first traditional bowl of the season and in excess of 40 members in attendance to mark the occasion; after which they were entertained in the Pavilion to a delicious tea and refreshments provided by the Club President and beautifully prepared by members of the Ladies’ Team.

Building up to the first league matches of the season on Saturday, 22nd of this month the Club’s teams are involved in a number of friendlies.

This Saturday afternoon, the A Team are away to Private Green’s team Ewarts; while next Wednesday night they meet a mixed Hilden team on the Park Green at 6 p.m. and on Saturday 15th they are away to NICS; following on Tuesday, 18th with a home match against Cookstown.

The B Team kick off their season with a friendly at home to Divis on Saturday at 2 p.m; and on Saturday, 15th they are on home turf again against Rathfriland B.

The 2023 President, Neil Sloan in his pre-season address expressed his pleasure that “the A Team were Division 2 Champions last season and that they’re now back in Division 1. It’s going to be a tough season for them against some of the best teams, but not a season to fear. He said “on the day we have players that can stand tall and win matches for us and hopefully the Team can shock a few opponents to finish in mid-table or indeed above.”

Commenting on the B Team he said that if they can keep a steady team to enable them to gain on their last season’s Division 3a, 8th place, a top half finish would not be beyond them.

He also expressed with confidence that “the Veterans’ Teams will compete well again this season and bring home more trophies, and also that the Ladies Team can repeat their last season’s exceptional successes.”
