Lurgan Women’s rugby team are set for an historic weekend as they play in their first ever competitive match.

The girls will take to the field on Sunday afternoon against Ophir Women in the inaugural weekend of the league campaign.

The team formed back in October 2019 and have had to wait two years to make their bow as the COVID-19 pandemic put a stop to their plans.

However, they will be hoping their patience will be rewarded in the opening game and captain Shauna Hanna told Your Lurgan that they are ‘excited’ for the season ahead.

“Lurgan Women’s Rugby team started in October 2019 primarily as a ‘Give it a Try’ programme for eight weeks,” Shauna explained.

“However, due to the huge success of the programme, it was decided to form a team.

“Unfortunately, Covid put a stop to our training in early 2020 and to the league but we finally have our first league match this Sunday at home against Ophir Women.

“We feel that this is the first time we will really get to put our training to use and are confident we will succeed.

“Our coaches Josh and David are dedicated to the team, and us to them, which has enabled us to reach this point and we are all very excited for the season ahead.”

Shauna has called on members of the public to cheer from the sidelines and anyone interested in joining the team will be made more than welcome.

“The best thing about rugby is that it is for everyone and we welcome anyone to join in,” she concluded.

“We train on a Thursday night from 7pm at Pollock Park, we are a very friendly, welcoming team and would encourage women to come and give it a try.

"The game on Sunday kicks-off at 2:30pm at Pollock Park and we would really welcome the support."
